Martynia annua  L. Š DevilÕs claw  - Martyniaceae

The devil's claw, Martynia annua, an annual plant native to tropical America, is now naturalized from India to the Malay Peninsula.  Sharp-beaked fruits are eight-ribbed, egg-shaped, black capsules one-and-a-half inches long (4 cm.).  The plant is grown in North America as an ornamental and for its curious fruit which is sometimes made into pickles.
