Cyperus rotundus  L. Ð Coco grass  - Cyperaceae

Nutgrass, Cyperus rotundus, a grass-like perennial sedge with inch-long, tuberous roots grows in many tropical countries of the world.  The aromatic roots, after the outer layer has been removed, are used extensively in India as a talcum powder and for perfuming hair and clothes.  In England they are an ingredient of lavender water.

At one time Phoenicians used them in embalming the dead.  The Pokots of East Africa wear the roots as a protective charm against various ailments.
