Oenocarpus bacaba  Mart Ð Bacaba - Arecaceae

The indigenous people of the Amazon use the seeds of the bacaba palm, Oenocarpus bacaba, for beads.  The fruits of this northwest Amazon palm are violet or black when ripe. The pulp gives an excellent clear oil which is a substitute for olive oil.  A nutritious drink is made from the fruit which is reflected in the genus name, oinos, (wine) and carpos, (fruit).
