Raphia  spp. Ð Raffia  - Arecaceae

Raphia is a genus of palms that grows mostly in Africa and Madagascar in freshwater swamps.  One species is native to tropical America.

Raffia fiber, so popular with craftspeople, is obtained from the leaves.  The fruits are covered with overlapping scales which look like unopened pine cones.  These are used as beads in Africa.
