Quercus spp.  Ð Acorns  - Fagaceae

Acorns have been a popular ÔbeadÕ in many parts of the world.  The Chumash Indians of California decorated their clothing with acorns and wore them in necklaces.  Today they are seen in necklaces from Africa and Mexico.

The oak, celebrated in myth and legend, is considered a symbol of strength.  Sacred to Jupiter, the Druids built their altars under is branches.  In prehistoric times acorns were an important food for people in temperate climates where oaks, Quercus spp., are native.
