In the genus Combretum there are over 200 species of trees, shrubs and vines that grow in all parts of the world.  The fruits of Combretum are one-seeded and usually have four to six angles or wings.

A pole of Combretum sp. protruding through the roof of a hut is intended to keep out witches for the Lobedu people of the Transvaal.15

The Herero people of South Africa ascribe the origin of man to a species of Combretum.16  The fruits of several Combretums are made into necklaces.
