Bambusa spp.  Ð Bamboo  Ð Poaceae

The stems of bamboo are used as beads by many different groups of people.  Woody, shiny stems which are usually hollow are often decorated with designs burned into them.  In Ghana young men make necklaces of this grass to give to girlfriends.  Young shoots of some species are eaten in China and Indonesia.  The people of India consider the plant sacred.
