Swietenia macrophylla  King Ð Honduras mahogany ; Mexican mahogany  Ð Meliaceae

There are three species in this genus of trees native to tropical America.  Swietenia macrophyll, known as Honduras or Mexican mahogany , is a popular wood used in the manufacture of expensive furniture.   Fruits up to 5 inches long (10.5 cm.) and 2.5 inches in diameter (6 cm.) split into five segments containing winged seeds about the size and shape of maple keys (the winged fruit of the maple).  Lightweight beads are cut from the columnella, a cork-like, woody column in the center of the fruit.
