Chapter 9:   Botanical Beads of the Far East

Araucaria angustifolia  (Bertol.) Kuntze Ð Parana pine  - Araucariaceae

Overlapping cone scales of the parana pine, Araucaria angustifolia, conceal one large, shiny oblong seed nestled in a five-inch long (13 cm.) cone. The seeds are two or more inches long (5.5 cm.) nestled in woody cones.

The Araucarias are a genus of pinelike coniferous trees growing in countries bordering the southern part of the Pacific Ocean. The fossil record shows that 100 million years ago they were widespread in both hemispheres. The genus name is derived from Arauco, the name of a district in southern Chile where the trees were first discovered.
