Pinus  spp .  Ð Pine  Ð Pinaceae

The natural range of pines, Pinus spp., extends from the Arctic Circle to the equator.  About 90 species of these cone-bearing, evergreen trees are native to the Northern Hemisphere.  The hard woody pine cones have overlapping scales concealing a pair of seed that are usually winged.

Native Americans of northern California decorated their skirts and cloaks with beads made from the shells of digger pine nuts, Pinus  sabiniana9  The dried nuts of the pinyon pine, Pinus edulis, were used as beads in necklaces, bracelets, wristlets and anklets by the Navaho.10
